Pressure Groups And Movements

Pressure Groups And Movements: Pressure groups or interest groups are the organisations which work to secure certain interests by influencing the government policies. But unlike political parties, they do not aim to directly control or share political power. These groups or organisations are formed when people with common Occupation, interest, aspirations or opinions come together in order to achieve a common objective.

Like an interest group, a movement also attempts to influence politics rather than directly taking part in electoral competition. But unlike the interest groups, movements have a loose organisation. For example, Narmada Bachao Andolan,Movement for Right to Information, Anti-Liquor Movement, Women's Movement, Environmental Movement, all have a loose organisation. They depend on spontaneous mass participation rather than on interest Groups .Their Decision-making is more flexible and informal.

Pressure Groups and Movements Influencing Politics: Interest groups and movements do not directly engage in party politics but they have political stand points and try to influence political parties. Pressure groups and movements exert influence on politics in a variety of ways-

  •  They try to gain public support and sympathy for their goals and their activities by carrying or information campaigns, organising meetings, filling petitions, etc.
  • They often organise protest activity like strikes or distrupting government programmes in order to force government to take notes of their demand.
  • Business groups often employ professional lobbyists or sponsor expensive advertisements. Some persons from pressure groups or movement groups may participate in official bodies and committees that offer advice to the government.
  • lobbyist :- A Person Hired by any business group to persuade government to support business cause . He Gets Money to win favor from Politicians .
